Private home with bio-based materials

Tversted, Danmark

Combining visual appeal, functionality and sustainability is the aim of every construction project and precisely what the nikolova/aarsø architectural firm managed to do in this private home in North Jutland. To achieve their goal, the designers made no hesitation in combining an ancient Japanese insulation technique known as Shou Sugi Ban (burnt cedar planks) with a cutting-edge, breathable and UV-resistant membrane, our very own TRASPIR EVO UV 210.

Charred timber planks offer exceptional resistance to weathering, since charring enhances the timber’s attributes, reduces moisture retention and results in a harder, more compact and waterproof surface, in addition to minimising wood movement caused by fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The Shou Sugi Ban technique, however, does not entirely protect against UV rays because gaps – sometimes quite sizeable – can form between the planks, allowing the sunlight to filter through. And these, in the long term, would have compromised the wood fibre insulation installed under the charred planks. So, a UV-resistant membrane was needed. TRASPIR EVO UV 210 was thus selected precisely because it satisfies these requirements, but also for its exceptional fire resistance (B-s1, d0) and neutral design, in perfect harmony with the façade. Just like the tape that was chosen to secure it, FRONT BAND UV 210.
